　昨年度から本格的に導入したオンライン英会話授業は、5・6年生が2週に1回、7～9年生は毎週1回のペースで行っていますが、今年度からチャット機能が新たに加わりました。

　双方向で自由に英文入力が可能になり、生徒とネパールにいる先生との会話がよりスムーズになりました。例えば、日本の固有名詞や独自の食べ物、文化といったものを説明する場合。習った英語やジェスチャーではなかなか伝えられず、ノートに単語を書きカメラ越しに見せるといったヤキモキする時間もあったと思います。しかし、生徒が会話と英文や単語の入力を並行して行うと、先生からのメッセージもすぐ画面にポップアップ表示されるので、会話にいい勢いが生まれています。

　このオンライン英会話にまつわる生徒の感想はどのようなものでしょうか・・・

●最初は自分から話すことができず、ほとんど"OK"で凌いでいたが、1年以上続けて自分から話せるようになってきた。

●最近は緊張せずに話せるようになった。毎週同じ先生と話すと、物理的な距離はあるが心が通じ合ってきていると感じる。会話中は笑顔を欠かさないように気を付けている。『世界の共通言語は笑顔』と言われているように、お互いに笑顔だと自然と場が和む。

●英語で話すことに抵抗がなくなった。海外の人と同じ話題で盛り上がれるととても楽しく、習った文法を会話の中で実際に使ったとき、使えたときに、力がついていると感じる。

●以前は先生が何を言っているのか分からないことも多く、会話が続かなかった。それでも1年以上諦めず話し続けていると内容が分かるようになり、質問にも答えられるようになってきた。定期テストなどのリスニングでも点数が取れるようになって嬉しい。

●駅で、困っていた海外の人に話し掛けられた。習ったことだけではうまく伝えられないと思ったときは、関連する単語をたくさん出すなどして努力し、頑張って話すことができた。

　私は9年生の授業を主に担当していますが、昨年と比べて生徒たちが着々と自信をつけ、会話力が上がっていること、積極的に会話を楽しんでいることを実感しています。
